problem Statement

Tackle real-world sustainability challenges with innovative solutions

Tackling Carbon Footprint and Plastic Waste

A hypothetical institution, University ABC faces urgent sustainability challenges, primarily driven by:

  • Carbon emissions: 75% of its over 10,000 students commute via private vehicles, significantly contributing to fuel-based emissions.
  • Plastic waste: Over 10,000 single-use plastic items (e.g., food packaging, cups, cutlery) are discarded daily, with only 15% properly recycled.

Despite the university prepared with existing sustainability initiatives, such as recycling bins, carpool programs, and a campus-wide plastic ban, they are struggling due to:

  • Inconsistent compliance among students, staff, and vendors.
  • Limited enforcement of policies promoting sustainable materials.

The university is pledging a 30% carbon footprint reduction by 2030. Acknowledges that student-driven solutions are vital. As a university student, you can :

  • Propose innovative solutions or strategies to help reduce carbon footprint, plastic waste, or both within University ABC.
  • Your idea may focus on sustainable transportation, energy efficiency, reducing single-use plastics, improving waste management, or promoting behavioral change to support a greener campus.
  • The goal of the video is to raise awareness about the chosen sustainability-related topics, highlight real-world sustainable challenge issues, and propose actionable solutions that can drive positive change in the local/global context.
