Youth Beyond Boundaries

community - hoh

Hands of Hope is a long-term voluntary project established in January 2013 with a mission to sow seeds of change to the refugees through education. Co-founded by three UCSI students under the UCSI Scholars Circle (U-Schos), Hands of Hope aims to provide quality education to the refugees, to instill volunteerism among youth by providing a platform to reach out to the refugees, and to offer youth an avenue for personal growth and development. Besides volunteering project, we organise events for the refugee community as well.

events

Engineering of All

Engineering of All is an event organized by Hands of Hope with Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Built Environment. It is a half day activity that introduced basic engineering knowledge to students from different refugee centers and allowed them to practice the concept through a mini engineering project. The objectives of the event are to introduce engineering knowledge and concepts to the underprivileged communities, to nurture the interest of the underprivileged communities in engineering and to let the communities apply engineering concepts in practical ways.

Charity Musical Night

Hands of Hope Charity Musical Night is our annual fundraising event. It is a very special performance night where the performers are the refugee students. This event provides a platform for the refugee students to showcase their talents on a big stage, where refugee students are taking part in our original drama, Myanmar traditional dance, and choir.

Objectives

  • To raise awareness on refugee issues in Malaysia
  • To raise funds for the refugee students’ education expenses
  • To discover their talent and provide an opportunity for them to perform on stage

My One Day Uni Life (MODUL)

My One Day Uni Life is an event where we invite refugee students to UCSI to experience one day of a university life and introduce tertiary education to them. Its core objective is to motivate the refugee students to continue studying and pursue tertiary education, alongside providing useful workshops for them.

In MODUL 2019, one of our core objectives includes the cultivation of entrepreneurship skills which will be beneficial for refugee communities’ self-sustainability. In addition, this event is a platform between industry professionals, university students and the refugee community. Also, it exposes the refugee community to real-life experiences in business, at the same time improving their soft skills.

Simulation
This event puts participants in the first person’s view to experience the journey of refugees travelling from their country to Malaysia, and the difficulties and restrictions they faced throughout the process. It also exposes participants to the discrimination and predicaments experienced by the refugees in Malaysia. Various station games and situation simulations are carried out to let the participants experience and understand more about refugees.

Objective

  • To spread awareness about refugee issues
  • To let participants understand the situation of refugees in Malaysia

Charity Bazaars

Besides these 3 events, Hands of Hope had many other events such as Engineering For All, Colour of Life Charity Bazaar, Workshop, Mega Gathering, etc. Nevertheless, all these events are directly or indirectly contributing to achieve the mission of Hands of Hope which is to sow seeds of change through education towards the refugee community.

Hands of Hope Weekly Volunteering

Hands of Hope aims to create impacts in refugee communities through education. The refugee community schools lack teachers and tutors alongside many other learning facilities. Hence, Hands of Hope’s volunteers conduct weekly volunteering to provide educational service for the refugee kids. They are assigned to teach the certain subjects such as English, Mathematics and Science on a weekly basis. Those schools we served are located in Cheras area. Since its establishment back in 2013, Hands of Hope has served seven refugee community schools and one special need school.
